One thing I do remember is that my parents used to invite some of those young soldiers, particularly the Italian ones from New York, to our house for the holidays. And I remember, as a young boy, looking at them and thinking, “These guys are going to go to war,” and I never forgot that, particularly when I did become Secretary of Defense and I had the responsibility to deploy our men and women into harm’s way. I always remembered back to looking at those young men who were celebrating Christmas with my parents and in just a few weeks would be either in the Pacific or in Europe fighting in a war.
