Tara VanDerveer: I’m teaching in this class, I’m picking out, like, really exciting end-of-the-games, and there are—there are several games. But one game that really I just think of was maybe, like, our biggest comeback. We were playing—we were playing a team—we’re playing Oregon, and we’re playing at home, and we had a good team, and we had a great—we had a great 3-point shooter on our team, Jamie Carey. And we got down 26 in this game. Now, like, in the pros, maybe 26 is not that big a deal. Like, they come back all the time. But being down 26 at home and the other team is just, like, you know, high-fiving and hooping and hollering, and we’re—we’re looking dead in the water. And somehow, at the end of the first half, we started pressing. And what we had—unfortunately, we had someone get hurt. And then someone else comes in, and somehow we get it down to 12 at halftime. And we run in the locker room, and our team was like, “We’re only down 12!” You know? I’m like, “OK.” And so we come back out, and we just go—we just go on this, like, run of making threes. And one of the threes—the young lady hits a shot right in front of me. Jamie Carey hits a shot right in front of me. She falls down, and I jump up, and I just grab her, and I throw her up in the air. And it was just like—it was just like kind of the game, you know? And we—So, we went on to win this game—a game like that. But we had another game that we were playing for a regional championship to go to the Final Four. Those are the biggest games. Those are like the games that are like you’re—I mean, you’re just… you’re wired. And so, we’re playing a game, and we’re playing, actually, Notre Dame. And they have—they have great players and a great team. And we were down—we’re down, like, 17 at half. And we’re going in the locker room, and I’m with my assistant coaches, and one of the players, who’s a really high-energy, real exciting player, goes by, and, you know, she’s all excited. And so I’m thinking, “Well, how are we going to get this team, like, thinking?” So, you know, she’s going by and she goes, “We got them—we got ’em right where we want ’em!” And I’m thinking, “What game is she at?” You know what I mean? So, we get in the locker room, and so I’m like—I just said, OK, if she thinks that, I’m going to say that too. So I just said, “Yeah, we got ’em right where we want them!” You know? This and that. But one of their players, Arike Ogunbowale—who’s a fabulous player—I think had about… she had about 25 points at that point. But I said, “Who wants to guard her?” You know? “Oh, yeah, I will guard her.” You know? So, we ended up winning this game on a buzzer-beater block. That—it was… and everyone was jumping on each other. And, you know, I mean, we’re dancing on the court, and we’re going to the Final Four. It was thrilling, you know? So you—I mean, it’s just like you just—for those moments, you’ll just—you’ll do anything. You’ll crawl on glass to get to that, because it’s just… it’s so exciting.
