Thomas Keller: My father was a Marine. So at the time I was born he was stationed in Camp Pendleton, which is right near Oceanside in California. And although I was very young, one of the things I do remember about Camp Pendleton is one of the regiments had for a mascot a tiger. And so, as a young boy, this tiger was in this massive — well, I don’t want to say penned-in — cage. But you know, just standing there watching this beautiful, elegant, ferocious animal was something that was very captivating. And it was really about Marines and their ability to stalk, their ability to be calm, their ability to pounce quickly and seize their prey. That was something that was fascinating.
