Antonio Villaraigosa: I always look for the common ground. I always look for, “Where’s the place that most of us can land, feel comfortable about finding agreement?” I try to listen to what people are looking for. And I give people respect. A lot of times people want to be listened to, and they want to be respected. When I was Speaker (of the State Assembly), I would say, “Don’t get married to your bill.” Keep an open mind. Try to promote an open mind when it comes to trying to resolve differences, and promote this notion that, “Look, we’re here to get something done, not to stand firm and rigid in our viewpoints.” So create an atmosphere that’s focused on results.
