Billie Jean King: That first time I went out to see Clyde Walker with my new racket. Uh, it was at Houghton Park, which is next door to Jordan High School, which I did not go to. I went to Long Beach Poly. Um, I walked in; I met Clyde Walker, who I adored immediately. That, that helps a lot. Hospitality really helps. Um, at the end of that hour, hour and a half session, I knew I wanted to be the number one player in the world. I knew I’d found my destiny. I knew I want— I knew exactly what I wanted. And my poor mother came to pick me up. I go, “Mommy, mommy.” And I’m jumping up and down on the seat, which we’re not allowed to do. Uh, I go, “Mom, mom.” I go, “I found what— I found out what I’m going to do with my life.” And she goes, “That’s nice, but you have homework. You have all these things.” I go, “Mom, you don’t get it. This is it. This is it. I want to be the number one player in the world.”
